Moms tend to have a lot going on, on any given day. Kids need to eat, laundry needs to be done, cooking needs sorting, spending quality time with everyone so we don’t feel guilty about everything else we have to do. Then add a business to the mix and it can quickly feel like you on a hamster wheel that’s constantly spinning. I know everyone talks about balance but to be quite honest there is no perfect balance, I should know I spent years trying to chase the elusive balance but the truth is we will always wish we had more time to do the things we love. There are however certain things we can do to make sure we are managing and maximising the time we do have.
Get a planner
A planner helps you block out chunks of time for different activities throughout the day. You can schedule a time for both family and business activities without feeling like you constantly choosing between the two. Its doesn’t have to be rigid but does serve as a good road map to what your day will look like. I write down everything but I’m very flexible in the time I allocate to everything I need to get done.
Do the most difficult task first
You know the task you dreading to do? the one causing you anxiety. I suggest you schedule doing that one first, also known as eat the frog. When we do this, it gives us a sense of achievement. If you keep putting off this task chances are you are only increasing your anxiety and stress around the task. This will also motivate you to complete all the other things on your to-do list.
Identify and limit distractions
It’s important to become aware of your activities and how they affect your productivity. Social media is a big one for me. A quick scroll can easily turn into 30 minutes, I’m very intentional about the amount of time I spend on social media. If this is you as well, I suggest allocating small chunks of time in between activities on social media. Dedicate about 10 minutes to updating your accounts and then move onto the next task and then spend another 10 minutes interacting and responding to posts. Don’t do this in between every task.
Grouping tasks together, this is also known as batching. Batching is basically when you group similar tasks together and complete them within that set time frame. It takes more mental energy to switch between doing two different tasks. Focusing on a single task allows you to fully commit to the task at hand and improves the quality.
Halt the multitasking
Multitasking is defined as doing more than one task simultaneously, on the surface that might look like it’s saving time but studies show that multitasking does not work. You are dividing your attention which impacts your ability to perform and as a result, you do not achieve the desired outcome. Focusing on a single task allows you to fully commit to the task at hand and improves the quality.
Ask for help. As moms we become accustomed to helping everyone else that we rarely reach out for the help we need. Have a husband? ask him to jump in and help with certain tasks, assign tasks to the kids and get a reward system up to keep them motivated. On the business side of things outsource some admin work or things that take up a lot of time. These days you can hire a virtual assistant to help you as and when needed.
